What is a CPM machine? How does it work?

  • CPM stands for Continuous Passive Motion.  This is a device designed to gently bend and straighten any joint to help keep you mobile while recovering from surgery.  If your doctor prescribes a CPM machine for you, remember the following points:

  • The machine is typically placed on the joint within 24 hours after surgery.

  • Depending on your doctor’s orders, the degree of flexion (bend in the joint) will be regularly increased to reach at least a 90-degree bend.

  • Use the CPM machine 4-8 hours per day.  Combining physical therapy with using the machine will help you achieve maximum flexibility in your joint.

If I have a CPM machine from Priority Medical and I am having difficulty with it what should I do?

  • First, go through the basics.  Is the machine plugged into the outlet?  Is the outlet functioning?  Is the switch in the "on" position? (try both ways if you are not sure.)  Next check the extension setting.  It should be at zero or -5 degrees.  Next check the flexion setting.  It should be 30 degrees or higher.  After you have done this try to let it cycle.  If this has not fixed the problem give us a call.  We will determine if your machine needs to be replaced.
